After a week up-country sleeping on some of Togo’s less comfortable mattresses, I made a distress call to a friend who’s lived in Lome for a while : Where can an aching back get a good massage around here? She gave a glowing recommendation of Samran Thai Massage, claiming it was good as many of the massage places she frequented when in Thailand. It didn’t disappoint.
I decided to go for a Thai oil massage (12,000 fcfa) at the Avedji location with a friend, and the one hour session left both of us feeling completely refreshed and relaxed. The masseuse was very responsive to my request to pay special attention to problem areas of my back, and I was amazed at the difference a single session was able to make in reducing pain and increasing range of motion. We were each served a cup of herbal tea at the end of the session, which we sipped in the peaceful, clean, cool surroundings while plotting how soon we could manage to come back for our next massage. The experience was so nice that there was talk of even making it a weekly ritual!
Samran offers several types of massages – including hot oil, four hands, foot massage – as well as waxing, all of which is best arranged in advance by phone if you do not want to risk waiting. There is a sauna which I didn’t test out, because saunas always make me feel like I’m being slowly cooked.
Samran Thai Massage is open 7 days per week from 9AM – 9 PM and has a second location in Tokoin Hopital quartier.
